Bob Nethery discusses recycling as a vocation
Vocational Service
Vocational Service is at the very heart of Rotary; indeed, Rotary was founded
by a group of businessmen as a forum for them to share their experiences and to
interact with colleagues in different industries. To this day, an integral part
of any Rotary club is the maintenance of a balance among classifications of
businesses and professions.
Rotarians join as members of their business or profession, and many clubs ask
their members to offer presentations on their professions as the program for their
club's weekly meeting. But not only does the Rotarian represent his business,
profession and industry to the club; the Rotarian also represents Rotary to his work
colleagues, customers and the public at large.
Vocational Service is unlike the other three Avenues of Service in one very important
aspect. The other three Avenues are all related to the Rotary Club, but the Vocational
Service Avenue is the one arena in which the Rotarian is personally involved.
Vocational Grants Applications
The Arnold Rotary Club awards two annual grants to residents of the Ebbetts Pass area.
The Adult Initiative Grant is for adults residing in Calaveras County who have
experienced unemployment or have been employed only in entry-level jobs. It may be used
for traditional education expenses, but it also may be used for other needs, based on
the applicant's situation, such as child care.
The Bob Wehe Memorial Career-Builder Grant will assist an Arnold-area individual
at any age and any career stage who is striving to enhance his/her career skills. It may
be used to attend a conference, receive specialized training, or to provide new equipment
to enhance the small business of the awardee.
For more information on the two grants, please download the following files. The two
annotated files give explanations of the kinds of information required on the actual
applications. You will need Adobe's Acrobat Reader

Scholarships for students
The Arnold Rotary Club also awards two college scholarships with their roots in
vocations: the Len Rice Scholarship, named for Arnold Rotarian Len
Rice and awarded to a high school athlete, and the Gary Stanley Scholarship,
named for Arnold Rotarian Gary Stanley, given to a student pursuing vocational or
trade school education.
Calaveras County high school students can contact their school's guidance counselor
for more information on these scholarships.
Lyn Norfolk, Calaveras
County Tax Collector, is one of the many speakers
who have visited the Arnold Rotary Club to talk about what they do and how they
do it. The Club has long made itself available as a forum for members of the community
-- notably public officials and community group spokespersons -- to tell about their
plans and objectives, their experiences, and their relationship with the community.
